Because the information technology changes rapidly in recent years, design not only becomes a part of our lives, but also leads the living style of human beings. Meanwhile, design plays an important role in the near future. Currently, complete education regarding design remains only in high schools, collages, or institutes with higher education. In order to enhance the concepts of design and capabilities of evaluation among general publics, it is possible that we may reach the goal by providing design education for younger students. In domestic elementary schools, the teaching materials in Arts and Humanity topics usually focus on visual arts. Schools do not offer a complete course based on the concept of design. Also, design related subjects are insufficient either. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to apply 3D-form instruction to the basic design course in elementary school. The research targets are the fifth grade students. The teaching materials are based on the concept of “form”, divided into several parts including dot, line, surface, solid, geometry as well as natural form. This course begins with the concept of three dimensional forms and implements of design units in order to enhance the students’ basic abilities of 3D form perceptions. The instruction period was 28 weeks. Students were divided into two groups: the control group and the experimental group. The control group took the Arts and Humanity course which is related to visual arts instruction. Meanwhile, the experimental group took the course based on the 3D form instruction in this study. During the experiment of three dimensional instructions, the students were interviewed and asked to answer some questions to help understand the students’ preferences and difficulties pertinent to basic design course. In the beginning and the end of the course, two groups of students were required to take both pre-test and post-test separately in order to compare the difference of 3D-form capabilities between these two groups. The results generated in this study revealed that:
1. After the 3D-form course instruction in this study, the difference of the capabilities between the two groups is significant. That is, the students’ capabilities in the experimental group are significantly higher than those in the control group. It shows that the 3D-form course instruction provided in this study is able to enhance students’ capabilities of three dimensional designing.
2. After the course instruction, students’ capabilities regarding construction, innovation, function, and sense of aesthetics in the experimental group are significantly better than before. Therefore, the experimental group students’ capabilities of 3D form were improved significantly.
3. The students who went through the 3D form course instruction significantly liked the 3D forms than the control group. They thought that the 3D form were more interesting than the 2D drawing and even more challenging. It shows that it is appropriate to provide the 3D form course instruction to the fifth grade students in the basic design education. |
